Nine earn All-Academic for track, Newman named Scholar-Athlete of the Year

LakePoint, Ga. – Nine Lipscomb student-athletes have been named to the ASUN Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Team, as announced by the league offices on Friday.

Senior Wayne Newman led the way for the Bisons as he was named the ASUN Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The Nursing major posted a 3.38 GPA for his third consecutive Outdoor All-Academic nod and his fifth overall nod in his career. He was also named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the Indoor campaign this season and had previously been named the Outdoor Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2015.

Newman is fresh off of a four-podium performance at the ASUN Championships, including a conference title in the 400m hurdles. He will next compete at the NCAA East Region Prelims in that event as well as the 110m hurdles.

Joining Newman on the men’s side was senior Daniel Lenart, juniors Kade Hinkle and Jacob Poyner, and sophomore Nathan Morgan. All five were unanimous selections.

This is Lenart’s third consecutive Outdoor All-Academic nod and his sixth nod overall. He posted a 3.88 GPA as an Exercise Science major.

Hinkle and Poyner each received their second-ever All-Acadmeic nods, as Poyner earned one earlier this year for Indoor and Hinkle was honored in 2016 for Outdoor. Poyner has accumulated a perfect 4.0 GPA as an Exercise Science major, while Hinkle’s GPA is 3.90 for the same major.

This was Morgan’s first nomination. The Mathematics major owns a perfect 4.0 GPA.

On the women’s side, seniors Barbara Lee Ball and Katie Bianchini and junior Kacey Kemper were voted onto the team unanimously, while sophomore Bridgette Doucet also made the team.

Ball, a Nursing major with a 3.84 GPA, has earned her third consecutive Outdoor All-Academic nod and her sixth overall. She has also twice been named a CoSIDA Academic honoree and once an Academic All-American.

Bianchini earned her third All-Academic nod overall, after owning a spot on the Outdoor and Indoor team in 2016. The Masters of Education student has a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Posting a 4.0 GPA as a Biology major, Kemper becomes a four-time All-Academic selection with two spots on both the Indoor and Outdoor teams in her career. The junior was named the Women’s Most Outstanding Track Performer at the 2017 ASUN outdoor championship earlier this week, and will be attending the NCAA East Prelims next week after qualifying with her time in the 3K steeple earlier this season.

Doucet gained her second nod of the season after earning the honor for the Indoor campaign. The Special Education Interventionist major has a perfect 4.0 GPA.
