TAMPA, Fla. – A successful 2018 track and field season came to an end for a trio of Bisons on Thursday and Friday at the NCAA Division I Outdoor National Championships East Region Preliminaries in Tampa, Florida.
Senior Wayne Newman, junior Ryan Speer, and sophomore Courtney Brenner competed across four events at the meet.
In his fourth and final time competing at the East Prelims, Newman nearly qualified for the National Championships in the 400m hurdles.
He blazed to a career-high 51.13 seconds time in the quarterfinals on Friday, finishing in 15th, just two spots away from qualifying.
Newman earned a spot in the quarterfinals with a time of 51.31 seconds in the first round of heats on Thursday.
In his second event of the meet, the 110m hurdle, Newman placed 39th in 14.31 seconds.
Brenner finished 20th out of 48 runners in the 10,000m with a time of 34:44.48 on Thursday. She placed just eight spots out of qualifying for the National Championships.
Speer placed 34th in the 800m with a mark of 1:50.04.
Speer and Brenner will be back next year for the Bisons, while Newman finishes his five-year run in the Purple and Gold.
Newman closes his storied Lipscomb career with 17 All-Conference honors, including 10 conference titles across three different events, the 2018 Outdoor Most Outstanding Track Performer and 2017 Indoor Most Outstanding Track Performer awards, 11 ASUN Runner of the Week honors, seven All-Academic nods, two Academic All-American awards, and a conference-high four ASUN Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards.
