Poyner named XC/TF Academic All-American

AUSTIN, Texas – Recent Lipscomb graduate Jacob Poyner is adding to his trophy case as the former cross country and track and field star has been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America Team, as announced by USTFCCCA on Thursday.

Poyner is the first male athlete in program history to earn the honor and the second athlete overall, after Tessa Hoefle received the honor in 2014.

Poyner was voted to the USTFCCCA Academic All-American First Team after a year in which he earned a rare double in cross country by winning both the ASUN Individual Championship and the ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

The senior also helped lead the Bisons to their fourth ASUN title in the last five years with his performance at the conference championship.

The Indiana native compiled a perfect 4.0 GPA as an Exercise Science major, while notching a program-best three ASUN Runner of the Week awards this season.

At the Regionals, Poyner helped the Bisons to their best-ever finish as they placed sixth out of a field of 24 teams, including three nationally ranked and 11 regionally ranked squads.

With his outstanding performance on the playing field and in the classroom, Poyner became the perfect candidate to earn a USTFCCCA Academic All-American honor.

Poyner was one of two ASUN honorees, as North Florida’s Eden Meyer was named to the Second Team.
