Pair of Schwind wins pace Track & Field on strong day 2 of ASUN Indoor Championships

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lipscomb track and field squad closed out the 2019 ASUN Indoor Championships on a high note on Saturday at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex in Lynchburg, Virginia.

“It was a great championship meet for us,” Lipscomb Director of Track and Field Bill Taylor said.

“Obviously, Jonathan Schwind had an excellent weekend with three championship wins. Courtney got the long distance double in the 3000m and the 5000m. Zach Israel podium’d three times. Grant Mason ran a terrific 60m dash.”

The Bisons collected three wins and five podium spots on Saturday, adding to their two wins and three podium spots on Friday for a total of five victories and eight total medals for the weekend.

“We competed really hard, had great attitudes, supported each other really well and had a lot of fun,” Taylor said.

“Now we get about three weeks to train really hard before we compete in our first outdoor meet. Based on indoor, we have a lot to be excited about for outdoor.”

Sophomore Jonathan Schwind led the way with a pair of first-place finishes for Lipscomb.

He finished just behind his ASUN-record mark with a blazing time of 4:08.29 in the mile run. Senior Kyle Johnson (4:14.80) also placed sixth in the event.

In the 800m, Schwind won with a 1:52.30 mark. He was followed closely by senior Ryan Speer, the current ASUN record holder in the event, who placed fourth with a time of 1:52.92.

Schwind also helped the Bisons to the distance medley relay win on Friday, giving him three first-place finishes for the meet.

Following her ASUN title in the 3000m on Friday, junior Courtney Brenner earned her second win of the weekend on Saturday by taking the 5000m in a school indoor record time of 16:40.19, nearly 30 seconds faster than second place.

Sophomore Grant Mason took second in the 60m dash in 6.90 seconds after winning his heat on Friday.
