Once again, it was the base on balls that got Lipscomb pitchers in trouble. Lipscomb pitchers combined to walk eight batters in the Bisons 16-3 loss to the Austin Peay Governors on Wednesday, March 1.
Freshman left hander Josh Spicer got the start for the Bisons. Coming into the game Spicer had pitched three innings giving up four hits and no earned runs.
Starting in the first inning, the Governors struck early and often. Austin Peay loaded the bases with no outs in the first courtesy of two walks and an error. However, Spicer settled down and got the next batter, Jake Lane, to ground into a double play. But a run scored on the play giving the Governors a lead they would never relinquish.
Spicer pitched 2.2 innings giving up four runs, two earned, on four hits and three walks, striking out two. He was removed in the third in favor of right hander Brandon McClurg.
The Bisons finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Tadd Brewer hit an inside the park home run to give the Bisons their first run of the game, and bring the score to 8-1.
The Bisons added another run in the seventh on a home run by right fielder Zac Miller. It was Miller's first home run of the season.
The Governors scored eight runs in the top of the eighth to put the game away. Right hander Josh Smith came into the game with one out and quickly shut the Governors down for the remainder of the game. Smith struck out four of the five batters he faced.
The Bisons scored their final run in the bottom of the ninth. Nathan Sensing led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by Miller. The next batter, Caleb Joseph hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center to bring home the run.
In the game, six Bisons pitchers combined to allow 16 runs on 14 hits and eight walks.
On offense, the Bisons were led by Nathan Sensing and Zac Miller, each with two hits.
The Bisons are back in action on March 4, when they travel to Tallahassee, Florida to take on Florida A&M in a double header. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
