The Lady Bisons continued their bid to defend the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship in impressive fashion this afternoon in Orlando, Fla. Less than 48 hours after their triple-overtime come-from-behind victory over FAU in Boca Raton, Lipscomb defeated 2004 regular season co-champion Central Florida, 67-60.
"That was a big win for us, even this early in the season," said head coach Frank Bennett. "It's always tough to beat a team like UCF on the road, but to do it after a triple-overtime game is a huge lift for us."
Senior forward Courtney Boynton led the attack for the Lady Bisons with 27 points, including a red-hot 5-7 performance from behind the arc. Transfer Sophomore Penny Jones turned in her first career double-double for Lipscomb, logging 11 points and 11 rebounds in the post.
Although they led 35-32 at the half, the Lady Bisons showed some residual fatigue against an athletic Golden Knight team. Boynton knows the Lady Bisons' performance wasn't a flawless one.
"UCF used their athleticism and really put some pressure on us," said Boynton. "We turned [the ball] over too much, and let them get too many offensive rebounds."
Lipscomb committed a season-high 19 turnovers. The Golden Knights pulled down 24 offensive rebounds, while the Lady Bisons managed only 12 offensive boards. But Lipscomb made good on their scoring opportunities by shooting 40% from both the field and the three-point line, setting a pace that UCF couldn't match.
Redshirt sophomore Francine Houston led UCF with 14 points, all in the first half of play. UCF was fresh off of a 77-42 romp over A-Sun rival Belmont. The last time UCF and Lipscomb met was in the A-Sun championship finals, when the Lady Bisons edged the Golden Knights, 64-62 for the conference crown.
The 67-60 victory boosted the Lady Bisons' conference record to 2-0 and 4-2 overall. The Golden Knights of UCF fell to 1-1, 3-3.
The Lady Bisons take the floor again on Tuesday night against Fisk. Before the 7 pm tip off, Lipscomb will celebrate their record-breaking 2003-2004 campaign. The seniors from that squad will receive their Atlantic Sun Championship rings, and three banners, commemorating the regular season co-championship, the conference championship, and the NCAA tournament appearance, will be displayed in the Allen Arena rafters.
