The Lady Bisons paused before the tip-off of their game with Fisk University for a celebration of their Atlantic Sun regular season and tournament championships and their first trip to the NCAA Tournament as three banners were unveiled commemorating each accomplishment. All three banners are hanging in the rafters of Allen Arena.
Players who were senior members of last year's team also received their Atlantic Sun Championship rings. The current members of the team were presented with their rings Monday in a special chapel ceremony.
Lady Bisons coach Frank Bennett presented a ring to Lipscomb President Steve Flatt.
"There are many folks out there who say you can't have it both ways," said Flatt. "They say you can't play on the highest level of college basketball and still maintain your Christian beliefs _ it just can't be done.
"Well ladies and gentlemen, this ring is evidence that with men like Athletic Director Steve Potts and Coach Frank Bennett, and with teams who play with the heart of our Lady Bisons, it can be done...it was done... and it will be done again."
Rings were given to Beth Bradley, Monica Blake, Angie Ester and Kendra Ramsey, all senior players on last year's team. Also receiving rings were trainers Tracy Harrison and Will Ness.
Bradley and Bennett unveiled the first banner _ the A-Sun Regular Season Championship. The Lady Bisons were 14-6 in the conference, finishing in a four-way tie for the title after being picked to finish eighth in the A-Sun preseason poll.
Blake and Ester unveiled the banner commemorating the A-Sun Tournament Championship. The Lady Bisons won three games in as many days to take the title with victories over Troy State, Georgia State and UCF.
The third banner commemorates the Lady Bisons trip to the NCAA Tournament, marking the first time a women's team had made it to the "Big Dance" in its first year of eligibility. The Lady Bisons lost in the first tound of the Midwest Regional to Vanderbilt in Chattanooga. Potts and Ramsey unveiled the banner.
