Home had been where the victories could be found for the Lipscomb Lady Bisons this season.
All three victories this season had taken place on the court at Allen Arena. That streak ended Thursday night as North Florida, in its first season in the Atlantic Sun Conference, beat the Lady Bisons 54-52.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half. A 3-point shot by point guard Catie Woods gave the Lady Bisons a 17-11 advantage with seven minutes left in the first half.
But after that shot Antoinette Reams scored for North Florida on a lay-up with 6:01 remaining that started a 17-0 run for the visitors.
The Lady Bisons did not score again until there were 45 seconds left on the clock when Woods again connected on a 3-point shot. Forward Kaleigh Gossman scored on a lay-up at the buzzer for the Lady Bisons to trim North Florida's lead to 28-22.
"We had a dead spell at the end of the first half," said Lipscomb coach Frank Bennett.
The Lady Bisons have usually come out strong in the opening minutes of the second half, but this time around North Florida retained control, taking an 18-point lead (48-30) with 8:18 left to play.
"We had a dead start to the second half as well," said Bennett. "Then we were finally able to have some good intensity. We started doing more on the offensive boards. Miriam McAlister realty went to the boards."
From that point the Lady Bisons started mounting a comeback beginning with a 3-poiuter from Woods at 7:17. The Lady Bisons outscored North Florida 16-2 down the stretch.
"I thought we had a great effort coming back like we did," said Bennett. "We dug too deep a hole.
"We also missed too many opportunities during the last seven mintes. We missed free throws. We made a couple of turnovers."
Turnovers and missed perimeter shots prevented the comeback from being a victorious one. Carrigan hit her fourth 3-pointer of the night to cut the North Florida lead to 54-50. A lay-up by center Penny Jones at the buzzer provided the final 54-52 score.
Carrigan finished with a team-high 14 points, her fourth consecutive game to score in double figures. It was the fourth straight game she has led the Lady Bisons in scoring. She set season highs for field goals attempted with 15 and 3-point shots attempted with 14.
Woods chipped in with 11 points. Freshman forward Miriam McAlister earned her second double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high, season-high and career-high 13 rebounds.
Senior center Katie Beth Pate barely missed a double-double with 12 rebounds and nine points.
North Florida's Karli Knudsen led all scorers with 16 points. Jackie Beik added 13.
The Lady Bisons are 3-13 overall, 2-7 in the conference. North Florida is 7-10, 5-4 in the A-Sun.
The Lady Bisons have only one day to prepare for Saturday afternoon's visit from Jacksonville. Game time is 2 p.m.
