Sept. 20, 2005
Sept. 20, 2005 - The Lady Bisons made the short trip across town to play the Tennessee State Tigers in a volleyball match that went down to the wire.
After spotting Tennessee State victories in the first two games by scores of 30-28 and 30-22, the Lady Bisons rallied to take games three and four by scores of 30-25 and 30-28. In game five the Lady Bisons led 13-11, but lost 15-13. It was the third time this season the Lady Bisons have played a five-game match.
"After losing the first two games it is so hard to clear your mind and say let's put it all on this next game and that game only," Rosenthal said. "The girls executed their game plan all the way to the end of the match. There were a couple of unforced errors that made the difference at the end."
Rosenthal was pleased with the number of Lipscomb fans who made the short trip to watch the match. He was also happy with how his players handled the atmosphere in Kean Hall.
"Volleyball-wise it was a great match," Rosenthal said. "I want to thank the Lipscomb students and Lipscomb fans that came out. It was great to see that cross-town support. Tennessee State has good crowds. It is a tough environment to play in."
In the first game the Lady Bisons were winning late into the 20s until they lost their momentum. In the next game Tennessee State controlled most of the way. Rosenthal saw TSU tiring a little bit in the middle of game three. That's when his players started to elevate their level of play.
"Once we won game three I told the girls let's focus on game four and not lose our composure and we did," Rosenthal said. "Game five was a toss-up. Anytime you go into a game five it is a toss-up. We had the lead 8-7 on the switchover. Losing after having a 13-11 lead in game five is tough."
"Rutherford and Mullins, our team captains, are the anchors for our team," Rosenthal said. "They really put it to the other team. They really kept the team going."
Rosenthal also praised Samantha Sullivan who made 59 attack sets.
"Our girls don't give up," Rosenthal said. "They hate to lose. But more so than anything my girls give it everything they have got and I appreciate that."
The Lady Bisons are 3-10 on the season. Tennessee State is 7-7.
