After getting shut out the day before against Ball State, the Bisons' wasted little time getting on the board against Boston College, on Saturday, February 24.
Shane Simpkins led off the second with a double to right. Ben Williams followed with a single to left, bringing home Simpkins for the first run of the game. Branden Cadavid and Ryan Wilkins scored on an error by the Eagles second basemen to give the Bisons a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles scored a run in the third to bring them to within two. However, the Bisons added to their lead with another run in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Andrew Nickerson walked. One batter later, Allen Bolden singled up the middle, bringing Nickerson to the plate and increasing the lead to 4-1.
The Eagles added two more runs in the fifth to shrink Lipscomb's lead to one.
In five innings, Brothers gave up just three runs, two earned, on two hits. He struck out four.
"Rex really set the tone for us," assistant coach Brian Ryman said. "He came out in the first inning, got ahead, and our offense built on that."
Smithson continued his success this season with two scoreless innings, during which he gave up just one hit, while striking out two.
Right-hander Taylor Merry relieved Smithson to close out the game. In two innings he gave up two hits, while striking out one to record his third save of the season.
"It was good to see that we bounced back after a tough loss yesterday," Ryman. "In a tight game you see what your team is made of when they can hold on to a close lead. It was a good team win. Everybody did their job. Andrew Kincaide, in particular, did a great job in his first start at catcher."
The Bisons will take the field again, when they face Pittsburg at Dugan Field tomorrow, Sunday, February 25. Game time is set for 1 p.m. Right-hander Brandon McClurg will receive the start for Lipscomb. In 9.1 innings this season, he has yet to give up a run. He has allowed just six hits while striking out nine. Opponents are batting .182 against him.
