The Bisons split a double-header at Gardner-Webb on Saturday, March 24, taking game one 6-4, for their first conference win, before falling 12-9 in a game two loss.
After falling behind 3-0 in game one, the Bisons were forced to battle back, getting things started with a run in the third.
Branden Cadavid led off the inning with a single up the middle. Ben Williams followed with a walk, after which Allen Bolden was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. The next batter, Andrew Nickerson grounded into a double-play, plating Cadavid for the Bisons first run of the game.
Ryan Wilkins homered in the fourth to pull the Bisons to within one.
The Bisons took their first lead of the game with two runs in the sixth. With one out, Wilkins drilled his second home run of the game to knot the score at three. One out later, Bond singled through the right side, before stealing second. Justin Sanders followed with a single through the right side, scoring Bond to give the Bisons a 4-3 lead.
The Bulldogs scored a run in the seventh to tie the game at four.
The game would remain tied until the twelfth when Caleb Joseph homered to give the Bisons a 6-4 lead.
The Bisons needed only two pitchers in the extra-inning win. Lipscomb starter, Brandon McClurg allowed three earned runs in six innings in the no-decision. Right-hander Taylor Merry threw the final six innings, allowing just one earned run to record the win and improve to 1-0 on the season.
In game two, Gardner-Webb once again grabbed an early lead. However, the Bisons scored three runs in the fifth for their first lead of the game. The Bisons increased their lead to 4-2 on a homerun by Bond in the sixth.
Gardner-Webb used four runs in the sixth and six in the seventh to take a 12-5 lead. The Bisons pulled within reach with four runs of their own in the eighth. However, that is as close as they would come in the 12-9 loss.
Right-hander John King, was charged with the loss to drop his record to 0-2.
The Bisons will take the field again when they travel to Evansville, IN, to take on Evansville in a single game on Tuesday, March 27. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
