Good teams find a way to win.
Good players find the way to make the big plays.
Such was the case on both counts for the Lipscomb Bisons soccer team, a 3-2 winner in overtime Friday night over visiting Wofford Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
It was the fifth overtime game for the Bisons this season. They are 3-1-1 in overtime, 4-4-1 overall this season.
"Our motto this year is good teams find a way to win," said Lipscomb graduate assistant coach Kevin Burk. "That is something the guys have really bought into. It is something the guys said when they were coming off the field at the end of regulation.
"They were very positive coming off the field. "We have had success winning in overtime. It is good that they feel confident."
Junior forward Ben Page made the big plays when he needed them. He tied the game at 2-2 at 53:39 of the second half. He scored the winning goal in overtime on a penalty kick at 98:59.
"This is really a testament to Ben's growth," said Burk. "He is able to handle the pressure. When he scored he wasn't super excited because he expected to score the game-winner.
"He has really embraced the finishing role. He has embraced being a captain. He has been very effective."
The game was truly one that could have gone either way from the start.
Wofford opened the scoring at 9:26 when midfielder Stephen Newman scored an unassisted goal that scraped the right post as it went in.
The Bisons answered at 23:08 as midfielder Alexi Achilleos scored his first collegiate goal with an assist from T.J. Williams.
Wofford took the lead again at 2-1 on a goal by forward Brandon Lowery. Defender Chad Kite and forward Phil Beene were both credited with assists.
Danny Prichard saved four shots on the way to the victory for the Bisons. Russ Sandifer made seven stops for Wofford.
The Bisons, who lead the Atlantic Sun in shots, out shot Wofford 28-11. Seven Bisons had three shots in the game.
The Bisons also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Wofford slipped to 2-6-1.
The Bisons travel to Evansville Sept. 27.
