In the second game against Indiana State, the Lady Bisons put a late rally together after falling behind early, but it was not enough to overtake the Sycamores who picked up their second win against the Lady Bisons 5-4.
"They are a good team," Head coach Kristin Peck said. "(Indiana State) beat us 6-0 down there, and they are a good team. They hit the ball well, we made one too many little mistakes."
Indiana State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the Sycamores got an RBI single from Stephanie Spychaj. The Sycamores added to their lead in the top of the third inning with two more runs on four hits to take a 3-0 advantage.
The Lady Bisons started their rally in the bottom of the third inning, when Leigh Little brought home Jennifer Allsup with a single to left field. It looked like the Lady Bisons would add on some more runs in the inning, but a diving catch by Indiana State's right-fielder ended the inning for the Lady Bisons.
After a scoreless top of the fourth inning, the Lady Bisons came back to tie the game at 3-3 on an RBI single from Christen Campbell, and a sacrifice fly ball from Jennifer Allsup. After tying the game at three, the Lady Bisons could not take the lead and left two runners on base.
Kim Jacobson pitched two scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth inning, but gave up three walks in the top of the seventh which allowed Indiana State to battle back and take the lead 5-3.
"We have to find a way to be more balanced and focused mentally," Peck said. "A lot of it will come through experience. We had plenty of effort; we just made some small little mistakes."
The Lady Bisons looked to get a late rally going in the seventh with two outs when Leigh Little reached on an error and then scored on an RBI single from Heather Collins. Collins reached second base on a Kellie Sirus single up the middle, but the rally came up just short, as Julia Davidson grounded out to third base to end the game.
With only one Senior on the team this year, and nine freshman, Peck said she understands that even these losing games are good experience for a young team.
"They are learning a tremendous amount through experience," Peck said. "It is tough for me to take a loss as a coach, and I don't want us to lower our expectations just because we have a few more wins this year. Games like this will help us down the road. We talked about thriving down the stretch because of games like this."
"We came out today and we were fired up and ready to go. We just ran into a good team. It was a battle today, which is what you love about softball. Today it came down to the end and that's why I love this game."
Kim Jacobson (3-5) received the loss for the Lady Bisons, and Meagan McCurdy (6-1) got the win for Indiana State.
The next game for the Lady Bisons will be next Wednesday, March 28 when they travel to Memphis to take on the University of Memphis. Game time is set for 5:00 CT.
"We are excited to have the weekend off," Peck said. "It will give the girls a chance to rest up and recoup. Memphis is a really good team. We know they will be prepared, and it will be great competition for us as we get set for conference play."
