BIRMINGHAM, ALA. _The Lady Bisons volleyball team has already set a record, opening the season with a 2-0 record for the first time in the history of the program.
Saturday afternoon the Lady Bisons dropped the first game 30-22, but rallied to win the next three by scores of 30-25, 33-31 and 30-24 to beat Birmingham-Southern for the first time in the history of the program.
The Lady Bisons closed out the day with a 3-1 match win over Samford by scores of 30-27, 30-25 and 30-27. Samford won the second game 31-29.
"We were in control of both matches," said Rosenthal. "We had good individual play, especially from players off the bench.
Both games were part of the Magic City/Music City Invite hosted by Birmingham-Southern. Belmont University also participated.
"It was a great day," said Rosenthal. "They were good wins for the first weekend. I'm real proud of our players."
Ann Mullins and Lindsey Rutherford were both named to the All-Tournament team. Rutherford finished the day with 30 kills, 29 digs and four service aces. Mullins, the libero, was credited with a combined 49 digs in both matches.
"We served well, and we passed extremely well," said Rosenthal. "We remained calm. We had leads in almost every game. Our serves and passing were the keys."
"Jessica worked hard this summer," said Rosenthal. "She really did a nice job."
The Lady Bisons advanced to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament last season, playing their best volleyball at the end of the season. Only one player did not return from that team. Rosenthal was curious how his veteran players would respond early.
"We hit our peak toward the end of the season last year," said Rosenthal. "I wanted to see how they would respond as we started over this season. They did a great job. They were much more comfortable starting this season than they were last year."
The Lady Bisons are not strangers to hard work. They have only a couple of days to prepare for a road trip to Clarksville Tuesday to play Austin Peay.
"We have a lot to work on," said Rosenthal. "That's expected."
