The Bisons picked up a big win on Friday, defeating the first place team in the Atlantic Sun, the Jacksonville Dolphins, 7-3.
Left-hander, Rex Brothers received the start for the Bisons. He was sharp from the outset, striking out two in his first inning of work, and allowing the Bisons to strike first.
The Bisons finally broke through against Jacksonville starter, Tim Brown in the fourth, when Caleb Joseph drilled a solo homer to left field.
Two innings, later the Bisons increased their lead to 3-0, after two run scored on a single by Blake Bratcher, one of which was made possible by a fielding error by the Dolphin's centerfielder.
However, the Dolphins finally broke through against Brothers in the seventh, using three two-out runs to tie the game at three.
The Bisons responded in the bottom of the inning, taking the lead on a sacrifice fly by Jorge Gutierrez. The next batter, Allen Bolden, widened the margin even further, hitting a three run homer to right, for a 7-3, Bisons lead.
"Bolden's homer sealed the deal basically," student assistant coach James Ogden said. "We had Burnie ready to go, and we know what he's capable of out of the pin, following Rex. It was just a huge home run."
Right-hander Chris Burnett threw the final two innings for the Bisons giving up just one hit. Brothers earned the win to even out his record at 2-2. In seven innings, he gave up three runs on eight hits while striking out nine.
"We finally got we have been missing with our pitching," Ogden said. "We knew Rex was capable it. Jacksonville probably kind of underestimated us a little too."
The Bisons were out-hit by Jacksonville 9 to 8. Bolden was the only Bison with more than one hit, recording two, in addition to his three RBIs.
With the win, the Bisons improved their record to 6-7 and 4-3 in the conference. They are set to face off against Jacksonville in game two of the series, tomorrow, March 15 at 2 p.m. Right-hander Brandon McClurg is scheduled to make the start for the Bisons.
" We feel pretty comfortable, with McClurg out there having his first start of the year," Ogden said. "We feel pretty good about our chances."
