Lipscomb lost to the Colonels of Nicholls State 72-60 Saturday afternoon in their first of three games in Louisiana. A 23-2 first half run by the Colonels proved to be too much for the Bisons to come back from. Nicholls State improved to 4-7, while the Bisons fell to 4-7.
"When you play the first four minutes of the first half and the last four minutes of the first half and don't play the middle twelve, then your going to get beat by anybody," said head coach Scott Sanderson after the game. "Don't take anything away from them (Nicholls State). They played very well and shot the ball well, but we just didn't come out and play very well at all."
Within the first four minutes of the first half, LaKory Daniels hit a jump shot to give the Bisons a 6-4 lead over Nicholls State. However, it would turn out to be Lipscomb's last lead of the game. A 23-2 run by Nichols State put the Bisons in a 21 point hole. Lipscomb trailed 29-8 with 7:59 left to play in the first half.
However, Lipscomb fought back with a 16-11 run of their own to make the score 40-24 in favor of Nicholls State as the first half came to a close. The Bisons shot 38% from the field in the first half. The Colonels shot 54%. Nicholls State also out-rebounded Lipscomb 19-12 in the first half.
Half time adjustments were made, and the Bisons came into the second half firing on all cylinders. Lipscomb went on an 11-0 run to begin the second half and cut the lead down to five. However, this would prove to be the closest margin in the second half. Michael Czepil hit a three pointer to stop Lipscomb's run at the 14:17 mark of the second half.
"It's difficult when you get yourself in that big of a hole against a team where the best thing they do is half court offense," said Sanderson.
Eddie Ard and Brandon Brown both scored in double figures for the Bisons. Ard had 16 points and 6 rebounds. Brown had 11 points and 4 rebounds. Senior Jason Hopkins had a good game with 9 points and 2 blocks.
The Colonels had five players score in double figures. Gil Verner came off of the bench to lead all scorers with 17 points.
Nicholls State shot 53% from the field and were 8-17 from behind the arc in their 72-60 win over the Bisons. Nicholls State is now 4-7.
Lipscomb shot 42 percent from the field and were 4-19 from behind the three point line. Lipscomb falls to 4-7.
The next action for the Bisons is on Monday night at 7 p.m. CT. They will travel to take on Southeastern Louisiana. Coverage of this game can be heard on 900 AM.
