Lipscomb forward Eddie Ard hit a 3-pointer with five seconds left in overtime to seal a 76-74 Atlantic Sun win over USC Upstate Thursday night at Allen Arena.
The Bisons are 3-1 in overtime games this season. This was the second game in row that has gone into overtime.
"As ugly as it was we found a way to win," said Lipscomb coach Scott Sanderson. "Ard stepped up and made a big shot to win it in overtime. I'd like to win one in regulation."
The Bisons and Upstate battled to a 66-66 tie in regulation. Upstate's Jeremy Byrd dropped in a lay-up with three seconds left to knot the score.
Upstate, making its first appearance at Allen Arena, trailed 35-30 at the half.
The Bisons appeared to have control of game when they opened the second half with a 10-5 scoring run. But with 11:33 left to play in regulation Upstate's Luke Payne hit a 3-pointer and continued to chip away at the lead.
A 3-pointer by Josh Chavis gave Upstate a 46-45 edge with 8:42 remaining. The Bisons would not retake the lead until the 4:49 mark when Ard connected on another 3-pointer.
The Bisons held the lead the rest of the way until Byrd's lay-up tied the game.
Freshman center Adnan Hodzic scored the first points of the overtime, but Upstate came back to take a 68-66 advantage. Upstate tied the game on a lay-up by Byrd and then took a 70-68 lead on a pair of free throws by Byrd.
Hodzic connected on another lay-up to tie the game at 70-70 and freshman guard Josh Slater on a lay-up at 1:42. He was fouled by Payne and connected on his free throw to give the Bisons a 73-70 advantage.
Payne scored on a jumper at 1:06 to cut the Bisons lead to 73-72. Payne again added a lay-up with 22 seconds left to give Upstate a 74-73 edge, setting the stage for Ard's 3-pointer.
The Bisons held a 42-28 edge on the boards, but Sanderson was most concerned that they made 20 turnovers compared to 11 by Upstate.
"That is way too many turnovers for us," Sanderson said. "I thought our effort and energy defensively was good.
"But they were getting lay-ups off of our 20 turnovers. There is no defense for 20 turnovers."
Ard led all scorers with 24 points, hitting 9-of-16 field goals including 5-of-10 from the 3-point line. Ard has scored 21 or more points in five of his last six games.
The Bisons placed three other players in double figures, all freshmen. Forward Brandon Brown scored 13 and added nine rebounds. Hodzic and Slater each chipped in with 13.
Ard and Brown have both scored in double figures in 11 games.
"Brown, Hodzic and Slater have to play harder, play better and be more consistent," Sanderson said. "They have to grow up and play.
"All three of them made some mistakes, but they did some nice things as well. We need a couple of more guys to step up for us."
Payne led Upstate with 19 points. Bobby Davis and Byrd each added 14. Mezie Uzochukwu scored 12.
The Bisons are 8-10 overall, 2-2 in the A-Sun. Upstate falls to 3-15, 1-3 in the conference.
Saturday the Bisons are back in Allen Arena to face ETSU at 4:15. The Lady Bisons and ETSU play at 2.
