Early success did not translate into a victory for the Lipscomb Lady Bisons in their season opener.
For the first 11 minutes the Lady Bisons battled UT-Martin, holding an 18-17 edge with 9:03 on the clock. From the point on UT-Martin took over opening a seven-point lead. UT-Martin would lead by nine with 15 seconds before intermission.
UT-Martin never trailed in the second half. And in the end Lady Bisons fell short to Tennessee-Martin 66-53.
UT-Martin opened advantages of 12, 11 and 10 points in the second half.
The Lady Bisons rallied more than once, twice cutting the UT-Martin lead to four points. With 4:24 left forward Miriam McAlister trimmed the distance to 52-48 with a pair of free throws.
With 2:16 left in the game freshman forward Cree Nix scored on a jump shot to trim the Lady Bisons deficit to 54-50.
Wing player Jilian Partin led the Lady Bisons in scoring with 14 points. McAlister and Nix tied for the team rebound lead with four each.
Forward Phyllisha Mitchell hit six-of-17 shots from the field and four-of-four at the free throw line for a game-high 16 points. She also grabbed a game high 15 rebounds for a double-double.
Guard Jennifer Angler chipped in with 14 points for UT-Martin.
UT-Martin hit 57.1 percent from the field in the first half, but fell to 26.5 percent in the second half.
The Lady Bisons hit 37.3 percent from the field.
UT-Martin also held the advantage on the boards with 43 rebounds. The Lady Bisons were credited with 29.
It was the regular season opener for both teams.
The Lady Bisons head to Arkansas Sunday.
