The Lady Bisons Cross Country team started out the season finishing eighth in the Belmont Opener Friday night at Vaughn's Gap here in Nashville.
Sophomore Carolyn Latham led the way finishing 26th with a time of 15:25 for the 4-K race. She was followed closely by junior Erin Pyles in 29th place with a time of 15:32. Carolyn and Erin improved their times from last year by an incredible 58 seconds and 1 minute 29 seconds respectively.
"Carolyn and Erin improved their times incredibly over last year," said Lipscomb coach Bill Taylor. "That is terrific and I think it can be a great springboard for the season as both are capable of running further up in the race in the near future."
Also in the Lady Bison top five were freshmen Jenny Randolph (40th 16:07), Caitlin Anderson (50th 16:17) and sophomore Shannon Shoemake (58th 16:35). Freshman Valerie Winkler and sophomore Julie Alley completed the top seven for Lipscomb.
"Jenny and Caitlin had very impressive collegiate debuts and showed the guts and competitiveness that we must have to fulfill our potential," Taylor said. "At the same time I felt that our women have a long way to go. Our potential far exceeds what we saw today. However, it also is exciting because we have so much room to get better. Today's result is a great opportunity to learn, grow and move forward."
