Friday, October 24, 2008What happened last season had almost as much of an impact as what happened Friday night.
Miguel DaSilva scored on a penalty kick and then assisted on a second goal by Angle Chairez in a 2-0 win over Stetson in an Atlantic Sun game at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
But memories of last season’s game at Stetson, a 3-3 tie, played a strong role in the resolve of the Bisons.
“We were ahead 3-0 and we let them off of the hook,” said Bisons coach Charles Morrow. “We hadn’t talked about it all week, but in the locker room before the game started asked the guys what they remembered from last year. They said that we let them off of the hook and that they didn’t respect us.
“Anytime you can get a win and a shutout in the conference you have played a great game.”
The game might not have been played Friday night had it not been for the work of Bisons baseball coach Jeff Forehand, assistant baseball coach Brian Ryman and Andy Lane, assistant athletic director for operations who helped to dry the field.
It was the fifth shutout of the season for the Bisons, a new season record. Last season the Bisons had four shutouts.
“The guys know what is at stake,” said Morrow. “They feel like they can play with anybody in the conference. They feel like the pressure is on the other team.
“We hit the posts two or three times. It could have been worse in terms of the goals we scored. We had plenty of opportunities. We usually put away more of those opportunities than we did in this game.”
DaSilva scored his eighth goal of the season at 19:13 of the first half. Chairez scored on a cross by DaSilva at 73:53 of the second half.
“Miguel was excited that his brother, Antonio, had come into town to see him play,” said Morrow.
Lipscomb goalkeeper Patrick Walsh earned the shut out for the Bisons, stopping seven shots.
The Bisons held a 28-11 advantage in shots and a 10-7 edge in shots on goal.
“We wanted to get rid of the taste of last weekend defensively when he gave up seven goals in two games,” said Morrow. “We worked a lot on defense this past week.”
The Bisons are 8-6-2, 4-1-1 in the A-Sun. Stetson is 5-6-2, 2-3-1 in the conference.
T.J. Williams and Ricardo Atti were honored on “Senior Night”.
The Bisons close out the home portion of the regular season Sunday afternoon at 2:30 when they play Florida Gulf Coast.
