The Lady Bisons picked up their first win of the season against visiting UT-Martin in a final score of 61-56. It was the first time the Lady Bisons have ever beaten UT-Martin in a women’s basketball contest and brought the Lady Bisons only 11 games away from their 600th program win.
The Lady Bisons, who were 0-2 before tonight, started out slow against a UT-Martin team that had five wins last season.
“In the first half we were playing scared and afraid to lose,” Lipscomb head coach Frank Bennett said. “When we’re so tight we can’t make the shots we’re capable of making. We needed to relax and make good plays.”
At intermission the Lady Bisons trailed 20-27 and had given up seven turnovers to the Skyhawks.
“During half time I told the girls to come out their, play aggressive, and get defensive rebounding,” Bennett said. “And to play with confidence.”
The Lady Bisons came out looking like a different team compared to the first half and their previous two games.
Senior Julian Partin led the team with a 14 points and sophomore Jenna Bartsokas added 12 points. Sophomore Cree Nix had six rebounds for the Bisons and Partin followed right behind with five.
“Jenna does a tremendous job,” Bennett said. “She puts so much pressure on defense and has so many steals and scores off of that. And Cree’s intensity level was 200 percent better away from the ball and on defense. ”
The Lady Bisons raised their record to 1-2 on the season while UT-Martin falls to 0-2. The Lady Bisons play next at Bowling Green State on Nov. 22 and return home for two games against Samford and TSU before they start Atlantic Sun Conference play.
“It’s always nice to pull out a close contest and come from behind,” Bennett said. “It was good to come out here and show we can compete with that team and beat them.”
