JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Entering Atlantic Sun Conference play coming off two difficult losses, the Lipscomb University Bisons connected on early shots to propel themselves to a 69-54 win over North Florida.
Lipscomb shot 68.4 percent from the field in the first half to jump to a 16 point halftime lead.
The Bisons busted the game open with a 19-2 run from 13:38 mark in the first until Kyle Groothuis iced the rally with a layup with 5:40 remaining in the first.
“I thought the first 17 minutes of the game we played really well,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson.
Lipscomb shot 51.2 percent from the field for the game. The Bisons held North Florida to 33.3 percent shooting.
Sophomores Michael Teller and Adnan Hodzic both had double-doubles. Hodzic had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Teller scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Freshman guard Jordan Burgason scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Bisons. He was three-of-six from the three-point line. He was 3-of-19 from the three-point line on the season entering the game.
“Sometimes when a guy makes a couple shots like that it helps everything about his game,” said Sanderson. “I don’t like when guy’s games are predicated on shot making, and I’m not saying his is, but when that first one went down I know our whole bench felt a lot better.”
Lipscomb out-rebounded North Florida 46-24.
“[Rebounding] has been one of our strengths,” said Sanderson. “We have been out-rebounding teams by ten and we are capable of out-rebounding them by more. We should be out-rebounding them by more, but we have been shooting so badly. But tonight was a different story.”
Lipscomb held a 12-2 advantage on second chance points.
Lipscomb did turn the ball over 19 times. North Florida only turned the ball over seven times.
“Nineteen turnovers is way too many and we had nine from our point guards,” said Sanderson. “That should not happen, but I did think our ball movement was better and we shot 50 percent from the floor because of it.”
Cortez Riley led North Florida with 21 points.
Lipscomb evens their record at 3-3 overall, 1-0 in Atlantic Sun play. North Florida falls to 0-6 overall and 0-1 in A-Sun action.
Lipscomb continues their road trip in Jacksonville, Fla., Saturday against Jacksonville at Swisher Gymnasium. Jacksonville is coming off a 65-64 victory over Belmont. The game is set to tip at approximately 2:15 p.m.
“They are never going to quit,” said Sanderson. “They are never out of a game because they are going to keep battling and battling. They have a very good team. It should be a dog fight, but you can’t win two until you win the first one and we got it tonight.”
