Three at buzzer lifts Campbell over Bisons 69-68

NASHVILLE – Campbell’s Jundard Hartley nailed a fadeaway three-pointer from the corner in front of his bench as time expired to give Campbell a 69-68 win over the Lipscomb University Bisons Thursday evening in Allen Arena.

Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson used a different starting five to try to shake up his squad after a loss to Stetson on Monday.  Freshman Jordan Burgason received his first career start and sophomore Josh Slater started for the first time in five games.

Lipscomb was up 20-16 with 9:28 left in the first, when Campbell went on a 15-0 run over 3:23 to go up 11.  Sophomore Brandon Brown broke Campbell’s streak with a layup at 5:01.

Campbell was up 40-28 with 1:04 left.  Lipscomb went a 5-0 run to close the gap to seven at the half.

Sophomore Adnan Hodzic started the run on a layup with his first points of the game.  Brian Wright added a free throw and Slater connected on a fastbreak layup as the buzzer sounded to end the half.

Lipscomb opened the second half on a 16-8 run to take their first lead of the half 49-48 with 12:11 remaining.

After a three-pointer by Campbell’s William Kossangue on the next possession, Jimmy Oden nailed a layup to knot the game at 51 with 11:11 left. 

Michael Teller and Burgason both nailed a three-pointer and Brown put back a missed layup by Hodzic to put Lipscomb up 59-51 with 8:29 remaining.

Campbell went on a 7-0 run from 6:01 to 4:14 to close Lipscomb’s lead to 61-60.

Teller connected on a three-pointer at 3:00 to put Lipscomb back up 64-60.  Campbell’s Chris Reynolds hit a layup and the followed with two free throws on the next possession to tie it at 64 with 2:14 left.

Hodzic gave Lipscomb a 66-64 lead at 1:09 on a layup, but Matt Gwynne tied it on a jumper with 45 seconds left.

Brian Wright nailed a jumper from just inside the three-point line to put Lipscomb up 68-66 with 5.3 seconds left.

Lipscomb and Campbell called three timeouts before Campbell inbounded the ball.

Amir Celestin drove the ball up the bench side of the court before dishing it to Hartley who nailed his first longball of the year to give Campbell the victory.

Adnan Hodzic led Lipscomb with 14 points, 12 of which were scored in the second period.  Josh Slater scored 13.

Chris Reynolds led Campbell with 12 points.  Matt Gwynne added 11 and a team-high six rebounds.

Lipscomb out-rebounded Campbell 39-35.  Brian Wright and Michael Teller led Lipscomb with 7 rebounds each.

Lipscomb had 21 assists on 26 field goals.  Teller had five and Wright had four.

Lipscomb was 26-of-64 from the field for 40.6 percent.  Campbell was 26-of-59 for 44.1 percent.

Campbell shot a stellar 9-of-17 for 52.9 percent from the three-point line.  Lipscomb was 6-of-24 for 25 percent.

Burgason was three-of-seven from downtown for all nine of his points.

Lipscomb falls to 6-8, 2-3 in the A-Sun.  Campbell improves to 6-8, 3-2 in the A-Sun.

Lipscomb is back in action Monday evening at Belmont for this year’s first installment of the “Battle of the Boulevard.”  Game time is 7:15 p.m.
