Women's tennis falls to UT-Martin

Saturday, February 14, 2009

The Lady Bisons continued their non-conference play on Feb. 13 against the University of Tennessee-Martin at the Whitworth Raquet Club.

In a tough match, the Lady Bisons lost 6-1.

"We lost the match 6-1, but it is not a true reflection of how close the match was," said coach Kristin Lusk.

Falling close to winning the doubles point, Kara Jackson and Danielle Hansen lost to S. Leavy and A. Le Merle 9-8.

"We barely lost the doubles point after Danielle Hansen and Kara Jackson fell to Leavy and Merle 9-8, said Lusk.

"It was the best match I have seen them play this year, but unfortunately we were not able to pull it out.  If Hansen and Jackson continue to play as well as they did tonight they will end up upsetting a lot of teams this season."

Doubles winners for the Lady Bisons were Raphaela Jann and Claire Landry, who defeated J. Tiley and E. Koornhof 8-5.

"Raphaela Jann and Claire Landry continued to roll at number three doubles," said Lusk. "They have played well together all year and only have one loss (Memphis)."

For singles, the Lady Bisons had some tight, close sets.

Jann went into a tie breaker against M. Wahl, and lost 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Danielle Hansen also advanced into a tie breaker with J. Tiley. Hansen lost 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

"All the singles matches were extremely close," said Lusk. "We split sets and number one and number four and had an extremely close match three.  There were a lot of momentum shifts in all singles matches and we weren't able to capitalize on them.

"The girls know what they need to do to improve and I am confident that this loss will make us a better team."

The Lady Bisons travel to Dayton, Ohio this weekend (Feb. 21) to compete in the Dayton Collegiate Tournament. They begin conference play March 6 at ETSU.

The Lady Bisons are on the road until March 11, when they will play IPFW at 4 p.m. in Nashville.

"This was a great match for us to play before conference matches though," said Lusk. "A lot of the A-Sun matches we play will be close, and we need experience in tight situations."
