Wednesday, August 05, 2009Summer baseball wood bat leagues are winding down as fall semester quickly approaches.
One veteran Lipscomb Bisons baseball player and three incoming freshman played in the first season of the Cotton States Baseball League. The league is based in the state of Mississippi.
Outfielder Tyler Wilson, who will be a senior this season, batted .311 for the Tallahatchie Rascals. He also ranked 10th in the league in hitting. Wilson played and started in all 16 games and was named to the league’s All-Star team. He scored 10 runs and also had three doubles and 12 runs batted in. He stole nine bases in 11 attempts.
Infielder Colby Maxwell, also a member of the league’s All-Star team, played in 15 games, all as a starter, for Tallahatchie. He batted .294 with one double and seven RBI. He also scored 10 runs.
Lee Wilson also was on the Tallahatchie, starting in all 10 games he played. He collected one double and four RBI. He also scored four times.
Pitcher Josh Chism played for the Golden Triangle Jets. He finished with a 1-2 record. He made five appearances, four of them as a starter. In 14.1 innings he allowed 15 hits and 10 runs, seven of them earned. He struck out 16 batters and walked six.
Maxwell, Lee Wilson and Chism are all incoming freshmen.
Josh Smith, the only returning pitcher from the Bisons top three rotation, played briefly this summer for the Sanford River Rats of the Florida Collegiate Summer League. Smith made four starts, finishing with a 3-1 record. In 23.2 innings he struck out 24 batters, allowed 23 hits, walked eight and gave up nine runs, all earned. Smith will be a senior this season for the Bisons.
On the professional level left-hander Rex Brothers is 2-0 with a 4.50 earned run average for the Tri-City Dust Devils, a Class A franchise for the Colorado Rockies. Brothers has appeared in five games, all in relief. In six innings he has struck out 13 batters, walked three and scattered five hits. He has given up three runs, all earned.
