Friday, October 16, 2009THE GAME: The Bisons are home for a pair of Atlantic Sun games this weekend starting Friday night with a visit from North Florida at 7:30 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
The Bisons are 2-8-2 overall, 0-3-1 in the conference. North Florida is 2-8-0, 2-1-0 in the A-Sun.
North Florida is 1-3 on the road, but has won its last two games, shutting down Stetson 2-0 Oct. 4 and beat Jacksonville on the road 2-1 Oct. 10. The Bisons are 2-1-2 at home this season, but are still seeking their first Atlantic Sun victory.
BIG SHOTS : The Bisons hold down the top three spots overall in the conference in shots. Garrett McLaughlin leads with 40 followed by Andrew Chamberlain with 35 and Garret Pettis with 33.
Miguel DaSilva is tied for ninth overall with 26.
Pettis leads the conference overall in shots per game with 3.30. McLaughlin is third with 3.08. Chamberlain is fifth with 2.69.
The Bisons lead the A-Sun overall in shots with 235, an average of 18.08 per game.
EIGHT IS GREAT :The Bisons were ranked eighth Sept. 7 in the South Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the highest ranking in the history of the program.
The Bisons were undefeated after the first three games of the season for the first time in the history of the program. Their previous best start was in 2005, the first season for Charles Morrow, when the Bisons opened the season with a 3-2 win over Trevecca Nazarene and tied Evansville 2-2.
GOALS ARE SCARCE: Despite all of the shots they are taking the Bisons have only 10 goals this season. They have scored more than one goal in a game two times this season.
They tied with Campbell 2-2 Oct. 1 and beat Alabama A & M 3-2 Sept. 20.
Only three players have more than one goal this season. Freshman Alexander Faulk and junior Miguel DaSilva each have three goals. Sophomore Garret Pettis has scored two. Faulk leads the Bisons with two game-winning goals.
PARTNERS IN GOAL : Brent McGee and Patrick Walsh have been sharing the starting duties in goal.
McGee is 2-5-2. He has played in10 games and started five. He has given up 15 goals, an average of 1.78 per game. McGee is eighth in the A-Sun overall in goals against average. He has been credited with 29 saves, tying him for sixth overall in the conference with a 3.29 average. McGee is seventh overall in save percentage (.659).
Walsh is 1-2-0. He has played in six games and started three. He has allowed 11 goals, an average of 2.44 per game. He has been credited with 18 saves. He is 10th overall in the conference in goals against average (2.44). He is 10th overall in save percentage (.621).
McGee is rated sixth overall in the conference in saves.
Walsh is tied for seventh in the conference in saves per game (3.00). McGee is ninth (2.90).
In conference games only McGee is ninth in both goals against average (1.86) and save percentage (.600). He is tied for eight in saves with nine. He is 10th in saves per game (2.25). Walsh is 10th in saves with seven.
A-SUN PLAYERS OF THE WEEK : Forward Garret Pettis earned the A-Sun Player of the Week Award for Sept. 21.
The Bisons swept the A-Sun Player of the Week awards for Sept. 7 with freshman midfielder Alexander Faulk earning Offensive Player of the Week honors and sophomore goalkeeper Brent McGee named Defensive Player of the Week. Faulk scored two goals, both game-winners. McGee recorded his first shutout of the season. It marked the first time the Bisons have won both awards in the same week.
REGULAR STARTERS: The Bisons returned all but one starter from last season, but only three Bisons have started in all 13 games this season - Garrett McLaughlin, Jeremy Reid and Andre Santos.
THE GANG’S ALL HERE: The Bisons one starter missing from last season is defender/midfielder T.J. Williams who graduated.
POLLS, THE POLLS : The Bisons were selected to finish third in the Atlantic Sun Conference in the preseason poll of coaches. They also received one first place vote. It is the highest preseason conference ranking for the Bisons in the NCAA era.
WHAT’S NEXT : The Bisons are back at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon at 2:30 against Jacksonville.
