Sunday, December 20, 2009The Lipscomb Bisons, fresh from final exams, have had another cram session on their hands this weekend.
After losing 80-52 Saturday afternoon at No. 25 Cincinnati, the Bisons, 4-6, immediately turned their attention to Arizona, 4-5. Tip-off time at the McKale Center in Tucson is 8 p.m.
The Pac-10 team poses some problems similar to the ones that the Bisons faced against Cincinnati. Arizona is also a tall, athletic and speedy team.
Coach Scott Sanderson has been preparing his team as quickly as possible for Arizona with approximately 48 hours to get his Bisons up to speed. While the time is short, he is happy to be able to quickly put the Cincinnati game in the background.
“A lot of guys did not play particularly well,” Sanderson said. “They are not being accountable on both ends of the court. I told our bench players to be ready because some of our starters may give them the opportunity to play.”
Arizona is averaging 77 points per game at home and is shooting at a 45 percent clip at the McKale Center. This will be the first game for the Wildcats in nine days.
Senior point guard Nic Wise leads Arizona with 16 points per game. Derrick Williams, a 6-foot-8 freshman forward, is averaging 14 points per game. Jamelle Home, a 6-7 junior forward, is averaging 11.1 points per game and is leading the team in rebounds with 8.1 per game.
“Wise is one of the better point guards in the country, not just scoring, though he can score,” Sanderson said. “He creates shots not only for himself, but for a lot of other people.
“They do a lot of stagger screening for their shooters. They do a lot of ball screening for Wise late in a play.”
The Bisons are led by junior center Adnan Hodzic with 21.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Junior guard Josh Slater is averaging 15.8 points per game followed by junior forward Brandon Brown with 12.9 and sophomore guard Jordan Burgason with 10.2.
Defensively, Sanderson expects Arizona to primarily guard man-to-man with a 2-3 zone mixed in.
The game with Arizona closes out the pre-Christmas schedule for the Bisons. They will return to action Jan. 2 at Allen Arena when Stetson visits for an Atlantic Sun Conference game.
