What can be better than winning your own tournament, especially when it is your first one?

The Lady Bisons closed out the inaugural Lady Bisons Classic at Draper Diamond with an 8-0 win over Evansville Sunday afternoon. It was the first time the two schools had met in a softball game.

The Lady Bisons are 16-1 and have won their last 14 straight games. This was the 10th shutout of the season for the Lady Bisons. They set a program record with 17 last season.

Lipscomb collected 13 hits on the day. Second baseman Abby Keese went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Catcher Mollie Mitchell was 2-for-3. Shortstop Courtney Billington also added two hits.

Lauren Dortwegt, Christen Campbell, Caroline Mason, Mackenzie Tucker, and Whitney Kiihnl each had one hit.

In the seventh inning, junior Megan Rottler hit her first home run of her colligate career over the left field fence.

“I’m extremely excited for Megan,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “She works hard every day. She’s one of those players that don’t get enough credit on the field. The home run was a huge confidence builder for her and definitely made a statement in everybody’s mind.”

Sophomore Whitney Kiihnl started the game on the mound for the Lady Bisons and held Evansville scoreless. She gave up two hits over four innings and struck out nine of the 15 batters she faced.

Freshman Ali Watson relieved Kiihnl in the fifth inning, giving up two hits but keeping the shutout.

“It was another great performance from Whitney today,” Ryman said. “I could not be more proud of Ali coming in. She’s had three appearances now and she’s yet to give up a run.”

The Lady Bisons play Tuesday as they travel to Cookeville to take on Tennessee Tech for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
