Saturday, March 20, 2010The Bisons earned their first Atlantic Sun conference win of the season on Friday, March 19, defeating Florida Gulf Coast 4-3 at the Lipscomb Tennis Center.
With this win, the men’s tennis team improves their A-Sun conference record to 1-4.
The Bisons started the match by making a statement, winning the doubles point and establishing an edge early in the match.
In the past few matches coach Andrew Harris has been making alterations in the doubles line up, mixing pairs up in order to find some better fits.
Harris might have found his magic pairs based on the victorious results.
Daniel Hangstefer and Joe McArdle were not able to pull out the win at No. 1 doubles, falling to Aime and Rock 8-5.
The Bisons picked up a win at No. 2. Chad Pierron and Tanner Brown defeated Leitz and Checchia 8-5.
Securing the victory at No. 3 and awarding Lipscomb the doubles point, Colby Shaw and Mario Hernandez earned an 8-5 win over Luovsky and Rebolledo.
With the doubles point under their belt, the Bisons entered into singles play with a 1-0 advantage over Florida Gulf Coast.
Florida Gulf Coast evened the match score with a win at No. 1 singles. Pierron was defeated by Aime 6-0, 6-1.
At No. 2, Hangstefer restored Lipscomb’s lead with his win over Checchia 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, in a close three setter.
However, the Eagles battled back with a victory at the No. 3 spot, evening the score once again to 2-2. Murrell fell to Leitz 7-6 (5), 6-4.
With another loss at No. 4, the Bisons lead had now turned into a 2-3 disadvantage.
At No. 4, Hernandez was defeated by Rock 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Despite letting their lead slip, the bottom of the Bison’s line up stepped up their game, picking up wins at both the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.
Freshman Colby Shaw defeated Rebolledo 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5, earning his third conference win this season.
Tanner Brown, another Bison freshman, secured the win at No. 6, defeating Louvsky 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
With the wins earned at the bottom of the line up, the Bisons regained their lead.
Following a winless conference season in 2009, the win was a great victory for the Bisons.
"Total team effort today,” Harris said. “From the beginning the guys played with a high level of energy and fight. After winning the doubles point, they knew they could finish. The guys played with a tremendous amount of courage today."
The Bisons continue conference play on Saturday facing A-Sun conference foe Stetson at the Lipscomb Tennis Center.
