Sunday, May 16, 2010Two Lipscomb Lady Bisons earned All-Atlantic Sun honors over the weekend at the A-Sun Track and Field Championships at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
Caitlin Anderson earned a third place finish in the women's 3000m steeplechase to earn All A-Sun honors. Caitlin also earned All A-Sun honors in the steeplechase in 2008. This is the third year in a row that a Lipscomb woman has earned All-Conference honors in this event. Caitlin earned steeplechase honors in 2008 and Catherine Beals earned All A-Sun honors in 2009.
Brittany Duerk, who also plays center on the basketball team, capped off a tremendous dual sport year with All A-Sun honors in the women's javelin for third place. This is the second year in a row that a Lipscomb woman has earned All A-Sun in this event. Kristen Ratzlaff earned A-Sun honors in 2009.
The women's team also nearly doubled their best team point total ever, with 31 points, though they finished in eighth place.
The women's 4x400m relay of Anika Piorkowski, Emily Longden, Amanda Twigg and Sara Stephens posted a new school record of 3:59.59.
"First, the toughness awards go to Amanda Twigg and Alex Jerkins who competed hard despite having severely sprained ankles,” Lipscomb coach Bill Taylor said. “Both of them missed a lot of training time the past few weeks and gave all they had though it was obvious they were hurting.
“Also earning a toughness award was Meredith McFarlin who took a tumble over a barrier in the third lap of the women's steeplechase while leading. She crashed hard, hit the curbing, lost a shoe, then got up and ran the rest of the steeplechase with only one spike on. She caught a girl down the homestretch to finish eighth and secure a point for the team. And finally, to Isaiah Greer who competed in the 1500m, the 800m, then wanted to do the 5000m as well, and was the second finisher for our team in that race.”
The Lady Bisons experienced both highs and lows in the meet.
"We had a day of ups and downs." Taylor said. "Although you always hope it will go as well as it possibly can, that's normal.
“We raised the bar another level as a program though, which is great. Some of our athletes really stepped up big. Every season we get better. It was a great year, and this sets us up for an even bigger year next year and beyond."
