Eleven Bisons score in 76-55 win at USC Upstate

Sunday, January 23, 2011

SPARTANBURG, S.C.—The Bisons jumped out to a 17-2 lead Sunday afternoon in the Hodge Center against the Spartans of USC Upstate and never looked back as they cruised to a 76-55 win.

In the first half, nine different Bisons scored and Lipscomb’s defense held the Spartans to just14.8 percent shooting from the field. Bisons head coach Scott Sanderson said he was happy with the defensive focus his team displayed.

“They shot 14 percent,” Sanderson said. “That’s the best half we have played defensively since I have been here. In the twelve years that I have been here, as far as sustaining and focusing defensively, that was probably the best we have played.”

Lipscomb held USC Upstate to just five points in the first ten minutes of the first half. The Bisons took advantage of the drought to jump on the Spartans and build a 25-point lead at halftime.

Offensively, it was a complete team effort for Lipscomb. The leading scorer was senior Adnan Hodzic who finished with 12 points. However, a balanced Bisons attack resulted in seven different players scoring six or more points. Overall, 11 out of the 13 players on the active roster scored for the Bisons.

“I put on the board today that we have to get balance offensively,” Sanderson said. “Everybody thinks that Adnan and Josh [Slater] are going to score a lot of points, and they are, but we scored 76 points today and they got 21 of them.

“We have got to have balance offensively and I thought that we got that. I thought that we got great support off our bench and it was just a good solid win for our guys.”

Lipscomb received 36 points from their bench and outrebounded USC Upstate 42-27.

As a team, the Bisons were red hot from the field shooting 60 percent for the game. Also, Lipscomb knocked down 7-of-15 three pointers (46.7 percent).

USC Upstate finished the game going 20-of-62 from the field (32.3 percent) and 3-of-25 from behind the arc (12 percent). Freshman Torrey Craig led USC Upstate with14 points and five rebounds.

In the second half the Bisons pushed their lead out to 31 points at the 8:55 mark, however that would be the largest lead of the game for Lipscomb. Nobody from Lipscomb played more than 25 minutes.

“It was just the energy and effort that all 15 guys played with,” Sanderson said. “We read verses today from Ecclesiastes about three strands being very hard to break. When you have 15 together on the same page, it is extremely hard to break.”

With the victory, Lipscomb improved to 11-8 overall, 6-4 in the Atlantic Sun. The Spartans fell to 2-17 overall and 1-8 in the A-Sun.

Lipscomb’s next action comes Tuesday night against Belmont in Allen Arena. Coverage of the game can be heard starting at 7 p.m. central on WGFX 104.5 the Zone. Jonathan, Justin and Benjamin Seamon will be on the call.
