Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup Homepage

The 2011 campaign gets underway this weekend for the Lipscomb Lady Bisons Volleyball squad in the "Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup" hosted by the University of Houston at the Athletics/Alumni center in Houston, Texas.

Coach Brandon Rosenthal's squad opens the three-match event on Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. against Xavier before a 7 p.m. contest against the host Cougars.  Lipscomb then wraps up the event with a 2 p.m. match against Central Arkansas.

"We're excited about this weekend and going down to Houston," Rosenthal said. "It should be a wonderful tournament in the sense of competition wise."

On the heels of back-to-back Atlantic Sun championships, the Lady Bisons face a familiar foe from the 2010 slate in Xavier in the season lid lifter.  The two teams battled last November in Allen Arena with Lipscomb completing their perfect 9-0 season on their home court.

"Xavier is a team we got to know a little bit last year playing them at home and winning in five," Rosenthal said. "It was a great match. We play a very similar brand of volleyball. They are a very hard-nosed defensive team."

Friday night's contest against host Houston is sure to be a tough task as the Lady Bisons take on a Conference USA team that finished the 2010 season 19-13.

"It should be an awesome crowd," Rosenthal said. "It will be another great test for us. They are much improved from years back. There's no doubt they are going to be ready to play in the home opener."

Saturday does not get any easier for the young Lipscomb squad that features nine underclassmen with the contest against Central Arkansas, who finished 28-8 a year ago.

"(UCA) has a new coaching staff and I'm really interested to see what they're going to be doing and the changes that they'll have," Rosenthal said.  "All three teams are in the RPI range of 65-to-100, so it's going to be one of those tournaments where you can easily win or lose either match.  A lot of it is just going to depend on our nerves and how we manage those first kind of match jitters."

The Lady Bisons open up the 2011 schedule at home next weekend hosting the Lipscomb Invitational Tournament at Allen Arena.  Lipscomb's first match against Tennessee State is slated for 12:30 p.m. before a Friday-evening contest tilt against Charlotte.
