The Lipscomb Lady Bison volleyball squad opens up the 2011 home slate this weekend hosting the first-ever “Lipscomb Invitational” in the friendly confines of Allen Arena. Coach Brandon Rosenthal’s squad puts a 24-game home winning streak on the line against Arkansas State, Charlotte and Tennessee Tech in the round-robin event.
“This has been a long time coming and something that we’ve talked about for quite a while,” said Rosenthal. “We’ve got a great tournament planned with three fantastic teams. The exciting part is playing at home. This is the first time we’ve played at home this early. Especially with a young group, I think we will benefit from playing at home. We look forward to having as many people out as possible this weekend.”
Arkansas State – The Red Wolves opened up the 2011 slate last weekend in the Samford/UAB Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. Arkansas State opened the tourney with a 3-0 win over Akron before dropping five-set matches to UAB and Samford to end the weekend 1-2. The Red Wolves feature a veteran squad that return 11 of 12 letterwinners from a year ago including Preseason All-Sun Belt selections Megan Baska and Cayla Fielder. ASU was picked to finish second in the Sun Belt’s West Division. This weekend marks the first meeting between Lipscomb and Arkansas State
Charlotte – The Niners got underway last weekend in the Appalachian State Invitational where Charlotte topped host Appalachian State and Kennesaw State in five-match thrillers, while losing to North Carolina State 3-0. The Niners boast a veteran squad that features eight upperclassmen. Charlotte was predicted to finish fifth in the Atlantic 10 race. It is the first-ever meeting between Lipscomb and Charlotte.
Tennessee Tech – The Golden Eagles enter this weekend’s tournament on the heels of an 0-3 start to the 2011 season. TTU played some stiff competition in the Georgia Tech Invitational taking on the host Yellowjackets along with Kansas State and Louisville. Much like Lipscomb the Gold Eagles feature a young club with 12 underclassmen. TTU only has three juniors on the club and no seniors. Lipscomb and Tennessee Tech have met six times with each squad taking away a trio of victories.
Friday, Sept. 2nd
