COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Behind a career high 20-point effort from junior wing Hannah Phillips including 17 in the second half, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team earned a 66-61 non-conference win over Tennessee Tech at the Eblen Center in Cookeville.
Notching the first win in four attempts against the Golden Eagles (2-6, 0-0 OVC), the Lady Bisons (2-8, 1-1 A-Sun) overcame an 11-point deficit at the break behind Phillip’s 5-for-5 second-half shooting to claim the first non-conference win of 2011-12. Senior guard Morgan Faulkner added seven second-half points en route to a 13-point night for the Lady Bisons.
Faulkner got the Lipscomb comeback started just before the half when the veteran sank a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining in the frame to cut the Golden Eagle lead from 14 to 11 at the break. Faulkner then opened the second half with another trey to get the deficit back to single digits.
Lipscomb kept chipping away at the lead and senior guard Anna Bowers brought the Lady Bisons within one point at 11:50 with a three pointer to make it a 45-44 game. Freshman guard Shanice Burnette then gave the Lady Bisons the lead for good with one of nine Lipscomb threes to put the Purple and Gold ahead 49-47 with 9:18 to play.
The Lady Bison defense stifled the Tennessee Tech outside shooting game in the contest holding the Golden Eagles to 15 percent from beyond the arch on 3-of-20 shooting. Meanwhile, the Lady Bisons shot 50 percent from deep connecting on the season-high nine trifectas. Overall, Lipscomb held a 44-32 percent advantage shooting from the floor.
Brittany Darling led the Golden Eagles in scoring with a 13-point night. She also led all rebounders in the contest with an 11-rebound night as Tennessee Tech won the battle of the boards 42-37.
The Lady Bisons continue road non-conference action on Wednesday night with a 6 p.m. tilt at No. 18 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.
