NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Unable to hold on to an eight-point lead at the half, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team fell 72-57 to Ole Miss in non-conference action on Friday night at Nashville’s Allen Arena.
The Lady Bisons (2-10) were firing on all cylinders in the opening stanza with Lipscomb leading by as many as 13 points in the first 20 minutes of action. Freshman post player Erika Thornsberry was a big reason for the lead as the rookie scored nine matching her career high in the first half. She went on to finish the game with 11 points for her first double-figure night in Purple and Gold.
Foul trouble for the Rebels (7-3) standout Nikki Byrd, who played only four minutes in the first half, aided the Lady Bisons on both ends of the floor and especially rebounding where Lipscomb held a 29-22 advantage at the break.
Byrd’s return to action in the second half would spark Ole Miss to the comeback. The inside force would post a double-double in the second half collecting 10 points and 10 rebounds en route to a 14-point, 13-rebound night. Valenica McFarland was also trouble for the Lady Bisons in the second frame scoring 16 of her game-high 23 points in the final 20 minutes of action.
Lipscomb junior wing Hannah Phillips led the Lady Bisons in scoring for the fifth-straight contest scoring a dozen and grabbing a team-high, eight rebounds.
After shooting 43.8 percent from the floor in the opening frame, the Lady Bisons went cold in the second half making only six baskets from the floor on 29 attempts for 20.7 percent. Lipscomb would finish shooting 32.8 percent compared to 38 percent for Ole Miss. The Rebels held a 49-46 advantage on the boards as well. The Lady Rebels also forced 21 Lipscomb turnovers leading to 30 points for the visitors.
The Lady Bisons wrap up the first half of the season on Sunday afternoon hosting Gardner Webb at 2 p.m. at Allen Arena in a non-conference tilt.
