MACON, Ga. – Despite a 23-point night from senior guard Anna Bowers including a pair of 3-pointers that broke the school record for treys, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team dropped a 67-61 Atlantic Sun Conference decision to homestanding Mercer on Thursday night at the University Center in Macon.
Bowers came into the contest needing one 3-pointer to tie Courtney Boynton’s career mark of 198 and the veteran tied the mark just past the midway point of the first half with a shot from deep with 8:18 to play. Bowers then claimed the record all to herself with 10:19 to play in the contest with her 199th career 3-pointer.
The pair of treys would not be enough for Lipscomb (5-23, 3-14 A-Sun) though as Mercer (5-23, 3-14 A-Sun) managed to pull away in the final two minutes of play.
The Lady Bison led as late as 1:58 to play when freshman wing Shanice Burnett hit a three of her own to put Lipscomb out in front 59-58 but an offensive rebound gave the Bears a second chance on their end of the floor and Mercer’s Alex Phillips hit a bucket to retake the lead.
Miscues by Lipscomb then proved to be costly as a team turnover and a missed front end of a one-and-one allowed Mercer to take a 3-point advantage. A Bowers layup cut that lead back down to one with 1:04 to play but Mercer’s Briana Williams, the top scorer in the league, drained a 3-pointer with 44 ticks remaining to give the Bears a four-point cushion.
A steal by Williams sealed the game on the next possession as Mercer converted the fast break chance for a layup and the 67-61 final.
Along with Bowers’ 23, the Lady Bison got a baker’s dozen from senior wing Leah McAlister.
Lipscomb won the battle of the boards 44-42 behind a dozen from junior wing Hannah Phillips, but the Lady Bison could not overcome 27 turnovers in the battle that Mercer converted into 26 points.
Ry’van Buchanan led the Bears in scoring with a 22-point effort. After the Lady Bison kept Williams scoreless in the first half, she came out of hibernation in the second half with to finish with a 14-point night.
The Lady Bison wrap up the 2011-12 season on Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. contest at Kennesaw State in Kennesaw.
