MACON, Ga. – The men's basketball team dropped a 63-54 decision to Mercer Thursday night at the University Center. Senior Justin Glenn had his sixth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Lipscomb was slow out of the starting blocks making just four of its first 18 shot attempts and falling behind 26-9 at the 7:38 mark of the first half.
The Bison (12-17, 7-10 A-Sun) then switched into a zone defense which stymied the Mercer (21-9, 13-4 A-Sun) offense holding them to one field goal until halftime. Lipscomb closed the half on a 14-3 run cutting Mercer’s advantage to 29-23 at halftime.
Once again free throws were an Achilles heel for the Bison. Lipscomb missed six free throws in the first half and was 8-of-17 (47.1 percent) on the game.
“The margin of error is razor then when you have the roster that you have now,” said head coach Scott Sanderson. “I’m proud of our guys battling back, but we have to do everything correctly and as best as we possibly can.”
In the second period freshman Martin Smith cut the game to one point, 45-44, with a 3-pointer with 8:49 to play. Martin finished with a team-high 12 points.
The Bison never took the lead. Mercer went on an 8-1 spurt after Martin’s trey and Lipscomb wouldn’t come within five points the rest of the game.
Lipscomb shot 33.3 percent from the field while Mercer connected on 41.8 percent of its shots.
Neither team was successful from beyond the arc. The Bison made 6-of-22 attempts and Mercer was 5-of-21.
Bud Thomas scored 15 points for the Bears while Daniel Coursey added 12 tallies.
Lipscomb closes the regular season Saturday at Kennesaw State. The game is set to tip at 4 p.m. central.
The Bison will be the No. 7 seed in next week's Atlantic Sun Tournament in Macon, Ga. They will play No. 2 seed Mercer at 7:30 p.m. central Wednesday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and 102.5 The Game.
