The only thing better than one shut out is two of them back-to-back.

Lipscomb Lady Bison right-hander Whitney Kiihnl shut down IPFW 8-0 in game one, and left-hander Ashley Anderson closed out the doubleheader with a 2-0 blanking Wednesday afternoon at Draper Diamond.

It was the fifth shutout of the season for Kiihnl, 10-3. It was the first collegiate win for Anderson, 1-3, and also her first collegiate shutout.

“I thought Ashley and Whitney threw great,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “They worked themselves out of some jams. They kept us in the games.”

The Lady Bison ran their record to 11-6 and have won their last three games. IPFW falls to 12-4

“IPFW has wins over good competition,” Ryman said. “I thought our girls came out extremely confident from the very first pitch. We were taking our hacks and finding ways to make things happen. All-around I thought we played well.”

Anderson has improved with each outing this season after having to sit out her freshman season due to an injury. She gave up 10 hits, but she struck out a season-high nine. She did not walk a batter, but she did hit one.

“It feels good to get back in the groove of things,” Anderson said. “I’m not nervous any more. It feels like I am back where I was before I got hurt.”

Kiihnl scattered three hits and struck out eight. She walked only one batter.

“They worked ahead for the most part,” Ryman said. “They limited walks.”

Game one was called after five innings due to the eight-run ahead rule. Haley Elliott blasted a three-run homer to left field in the third inning. In the fifth Bridgette Begle slammed a two-run home run to left, her first career collegiate homer. Bree Thurman doubled to right center to bring in the eighth run.

The Lady Bison were held to only two hits in game two, but one was a two-run home run to left field by Kelsey Cartwright in the first inning. The only other hit was a single down the right field line by Elliott.

“I’m never upset about home runs,” Ryman said. “For most of the second game that was all we hit.

“We have to keep finding ways to get better with every at bat. We did have several home runs and we took advantage of that. But there might be games where we don’t hit any home runs and we will have to find a way to scrap and be aggressive on the bases and score some runs.”

Megan Flenniken threw the first game for IPFW and gave up eight hits in 4.2 innings. She struck out three and walked four.

Miranda Kramer closed out the second game with five scoreless innings for IPFW. She struck out five and walked six.

The Lady Bison Classic will be played this weekend at Draper Diamond. The Lady Bison open with Drake at 2:15 Friday. Also in the field are Eastern Michigan, Alabama State and MTSU.
