LEXINGTON, Ky.-The Lipscomb volleyball team dropped their opening match of the 2012 season to Long Beach State 3-0 in the Kentucky Classic.
In the first set, a Caitlin Dotson kill brought the Lady Bisons (0-1) within one point, 21-20, but the 49ers (1-0) scored the last four points to win the set 25-20.
In the second, LU jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but LBSU battled back and won the set 25-19. In the third set, the Lady Bisons tied the set up at 17 apiece, but the 49ers were able to pull away and win the third set 25-19.
“The pieces were there, but we didn’t play our brand of volleyball,” Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “We needed to create pressure and we didn’t do a good job of that.”
Sophomore Lauren Ford led the team with ten kills and added six digs, while Dotson led the team with 28 assists and had seven digs. Junior Stephanie Rex led the team with 11 digs.
Two freshmen were able to see some playing time in the game. Brittnay Estes had two kills on the night, while Molly Spitznagle also made her collegiate debut.
“It was good to see what these freshmen are going to bring on the court,” Rosenthal said. “It’s time to see what they have learned in the last two and a half weeks.”
Rosenthal was impressed by the defensive effort, but knows they could have played together a little better.
“Our defensive players played good,” Rosenthal said. “But we didn’t play good team defense.”
Delainey Aigner-Swesey led the 49ers with 16 kills and seven digs, while Tara Roenicke had 32 assists.
The Lady Bisons will be back in action with a doubleheader against host team No. 13 Kentucky at 10 a.m. and then will finish up the tournament with a match against North Carolina at 6 p.m.
“They’re (Kentucky) a more physical team that we are,” Rosenthal said. “We have to utilize our speed and play our game and believe our way.”
