Cross Country finds sledding tough at Greater Louisville Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Racing against the nation’s best teams,  the Lipscomb men’s and women’s cross country teams found the going tough in the 2012 Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic hosted at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park in Louisville.

Competing in the “Gold” race LU’s top women’s runners notched a 24th-place finish in the 31-team field while the Bison men finished 25th among the 46 schools competing in the “Blue” race.  The Lady Bisons also took to the course in the “Blue” race tying for 17th among 43 schools while the Bison men notched a 10th-place finish in the “Silver” race.

Arizona claimed top honors in the women’s “Gold” race that saw BCS squads claim the top 11 positions on the day.  Eastern Kentucky brought home first-place honors in the men’s “Blue” race just ahead of Grand Valley State and Arkansas-Little Rock.

A trio of Lady Bisons crossed the finish line in order as freshman Madelin Talbert paced the Purple and Gold for the second straight week finishing 141st in 18:17.37 in the 5,000-meter race.  Sophomore Kaitlyn Llewellyn finished on Talbert’s heels at 18:18.05 and was only .08 seconds ahead of junior Tessa Hoefle, who notched a time of 18:18.13.

Sophomores Minna Fields (18:36.25, 178th) Maggie Lawerence (18:37.78, 179th) and Kendra Lobley (18:40.55, 181st) and junior Alex Newby (18:56.74, 198th) rounded out the scoring for Lipscomb.  Junior Missy Dowd (19:02.41) just missed a top-200 finish coming in 205th just edging teammate Dani Walker (19:03.67), who finished 206th.  Sophomore Kayla Droessler (19:25.00, 223rd) rounded out the competitors for LU in the “Gold” race.

Senior Ben Wright paced the men’s squad in the 8,000-meter jaunt with a 105th-place effort (26:26.16)  Sophomore Ryan Gadsey (26:31.54) was the second Bison to cross the line with a 118th-place finish.  Freshmen Fidel Leon (26:34.96, 129th), Daniel Gardner (26:37.06, 136th) Austin Casassa (26:40.16, 145th) and Matt Fry (27:02.00) rounded out the top six for the men’s squad.

In the women’s “Blue” race, sophomore Renee Menzie was the top performer for LU in the event and the day with a 64th-place finish (18:58.50).  Menzie finished seven slots ahead of newcomer Hannah Munyan, who posted a time of 19:04.49.  Fellow newcomer Alex Tate finished 111th (19:21.84) ahead of junior Emily Longden, who finished 126th (19:28.80), sophomore Lana Hojeij (19:42.63, 157th), junior Amanda Twigg (19:42.90, 158th), junior Katie Bunker (20:16.97, 221st), freshman Makenna Rickner (20:28.64, 244th) and junior Anna Belner (20:50.01, 271st.)

Freshman Jared Wingerter led the way in the “Silver” race for the Bisons with a top-20 finish (26:51.44, 20th) followed by sophomores Dan Coleman (26:57.66, 24th). Tyler Glenn (28:13.11, 92nd), Ben Ashley (28:42.58, 121st), freshmen Max McBride (28:42.26, 123rd), Andrew Bosket (29:10.93, 144th) and Jorge Estrada (29:59.97, 187th), senior Alexander McMeen (30:20.67, 211th) and junior Phillip Brasher (31:18.29, 246th).

Previously scheduled to run in the Florida State Invite next Saturday, the Bison men will instead head to Tennessee Tech on Friday.
