FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Lipscomb volleyball team lost 3-0 on the road against Atlantic Sun Conference opponent Florida Gulf Coast Friday night.
The Lady Bisons (17-11, 14-3 A-Sun) got off to hot start in the first set leading 6-2. The Eagles (22-8, 16-1 A-Sun) outscored LU 12-5 and eventually went on to win the set 25-19.
With the Lady Bisons down 24-21 in the second set, LU scored the next four points. However, the Eagles won the very close set 30-28.
“That momentum is huge,” Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal said on the second set. “We had a couple of chances. We were down by five early on and we fought back and even when it was 24-21, we fought back and took the lead. That’s frustrating. You’ve got to keep the momentum and we didn’t do that.”
FGCU won the third set 25-18 and the match to clinch the No. 1 seed in the A-Sun tournament and the A-Sun regular season crown. The Lady Bisons will be the No. 2 seed.
“I thought early on we did some nice things,” Rosenthal said. “The story in the whole match was that we didn’t come up with the plays at the critical points. We were fighting an uphill battle.”
The middle blockers did very well for the Lady Bisons. Sophomore Jewell Dobson and freshman Molly Spitznagle led the team with 12 kills each. Dobson had a hitting percentage of .400, while Spitznagle had .333.
“We had a pretty high hitting percentage out of both of them and it feels good,” Rosenthal said. “But at the end of the day, our outsides have got to be able to score.”
Jill Hopper led the Eagles with a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs. Whitney Masters also had 15 digs, while Gigi Meyer and Courtney Greenberg had 21 and 16 assists respectively.
The Lady Bisons play their last A-Sun regular season match at Stetson Saturday at 1 p.m.
