NASHVILLE, Tenn. Team captain Alyssa Bellini stresses that the Lipscomb Lady Bisons will be getting to the point in practice this week.
“We will start to focus more on points play and getting our feet underneath us,” Bellini said. “In the fall we worked on all of the different parts of the game, but now it is time to put it all together.
“We will try to figure out where and how each person plays her best points and stick with it. Every person plays differently and the person you play against plays differently. It is all about sticking with your game plan, but being flexible enough to change.”
In many ways the Lady Bisons will be taking a blue-collar approach to the game.
“For practice we have to make sure we have all of our tools ready to go,” Bellini said. “You have to make sure your forehand is crisp and that your serve and your feet are where they need to be.”
The Lady Bisons opened the season Jan. 15 at Memphis and fell 7-0.
“Memphis is an amazing team,” Bellini said. “They are going to be one of the better teams we play. It is hard to play a team that is faster and stronger.
“They were a very confident team. It was hard to walk into that, especially in our first match a week into the season.”
Bellini, a junior, is the veteran on the team which also includes three sophomores and three freshmen. This weekend the Lady Bisons host Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m. Friday and Evansville at 7 p.m. Saturday. Bellini wants to make sure that the younger players are able to forget the Memphis match.
“I think some of the younger players might be discouraged from that,” Bellini said. “But I told them, and our coaches told them, that is the kind of match where you just compete with your heart. And when you are done, you let it go.
“Some of our girls had pretty close sets with them. Every point you earn is something that you are proud of in a match like that. I think everyone took something positive out of it. All of the girls are strong leaders and strong competitors. We just have to apply all of the work we did in the fall.”
