NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Nothing raises the morale of a team like a win, especially when that team has been struggling.
After losing their first four matches, the Lipscomb Lady Bisons bounced back this past weekend for a 6-1 win over North Alabama, a Division II foe.
This weekend the Lady Bisons will be out to build on that success. They visit Murray State in Murray, Ky., for a 2 p.m. match. The Lady Bisons return home Sunday to face Tennessee-Martin at 1 p.m. on the Lipscomb campus at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center.
“It was nice to have not only a win, but a pretty easy one to build our confidence,” junior Alyssa Bellini said. “It is eally good to get a boost like this.
“I have been around for a couple of years. I know the team. It has been confusing, especially for the younger players. They have always been great players in their home countries or states and have won most of their matches. And they come here and it is very different.”
Bellini, playing in the No. 3 position, won her match 6-2, 6-0 against North Alabama. She teamed with Lorena Djuknic in doubles play for an 8-4 victory.
Everything for the Lady Bisons is pointing to Atlantic Sun Conference matches which begin in March. Bellini thinks she and her teammates are almost ready for that challenge.
“We are closer to being ready than we have been since I have been here,” Bellini said. “Fall is not about tennis. Fall is about fitness. You are hurting the whole time. You don’t really see a change in your tennis. Usually it gets worse.
“Now it is about tennis again. We have played some tough competition. Everyone has had good matches. But to have a win together to see how it feels was an extra mental boost. Physically we are there. Mentally we are going to be getting there.”
Winning as a team contributes to a better mental approach. Most of the mistakes the players are making are mental.
“When you look at individual matches we have played some three setters,” Bellini said. “There have been some 7-5, 7-5 matches. Different people are close in different matches.
“We need to have players get the extra kick they need to win. It is like a domino effect. If someone wins her match then it’s like I can pull out my match. I think that is on the horizon for us.”
