KENNESAW, Ga. – Behind a game-high, 22-point effort from senior Deonte Alexander, the Lipscomb men’s basketball team clinched a berth in the 2013 Atlantic Sun Men’s Basketball Championship by downing homestanding Kennesaw State 70-55 at the KSU Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.

“I thought we were pretty efficient on both ends of the floor,” said Lipscomb head coach Scott Sanderson. “We got some good shots and it was a total team effort both offensively and defensively. “

“We’re coming down to the last week of the season and we’ve still have room for improvement but for the most part today we played solid.”

Taking the court for the final road contest of 2012-13 season, the Bisons (11-15, 6-9 A-Sun) came out strong scoring the first eight points of the contest.   Kennesaw State (3-24, 2-13 A-Sun) answered right back and tied the contest 10-10 with 12:01 to play in the first half.

The contest continued close for the remainder of the first half but Alexander drained a pair of treys in the final three minutes to give the Bisons a 33-27 lead at the break.

Lipscomb stretched the lead to 14 just before the midway point of the second half when Talbott Denny delivered a dunk at 10:11 before Alexander made it a 17-point advantage with his fourth three ball of the afternoon.

Along with Alexander’s 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting, the Bisons got 14 points from redshirt freshman center Stephen Hurt, the reigning A-Sun Newcomer of the Week and 13 points from sophomore forward Martin Smith.

The Owls were paced by Markeith Cummings with 21 points.

Behind a dominating second half performance on the boards that saw the Bisons hold a 24-12 rebounding average, Lipscomb outrebounded Kennesaw State 41-33. The Purple and Gold also outshot the Owls 49 percent to 31.7 percent.

Lipscomb returns home on Thursday night hosting A-Sun foe Jacksonville at 7:15 p.m. at Allen Arena in a contest that is scheduled to air on ESPN3.
