ATHENS, Ga. – The Lipscomb Lady Bisons volleyball team rebounded Saturday morning with a 3-0 win over Furman in the Bulldog Invitational.
The Lady Bisons, who fell 3-0 to host Georgia Friday night at the Ramsey Student Center, are 1-1 for the season. They close out the invitational later today with a 4:30 match with Texas Christian. Furman, a 3-0 loser to Texas Christian Friday, is 0-2.
The Lady Bisons dominated the match winning by scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-20. Rosenthal credited assistant coach Ann Armes for developing a solid scouting report.
“All in all I thought we did a nice job,” Lady Bisons coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “I would like to see us play with a little more aggression late in the sets.
“We did an excellent job through two-and-a-half sets. I would just like us to finish things out and not let people hang around. We tend to lose focus, and as a coach that is bothersome. We have to be in the moment rather than just going through the motions.”
Outside hitter Lauren Ford made a match-high 15 kills to lead the Lady Bisons. Middle blocker Jewell Dobson finished in double figures in kills for the second match in a row with 12.
Outside hitter Sophie Kellerman posted a match-high .545 hitting percentage. Kellerman also made a match-high 13 digs. Middle blocker Claire Peterson was second in the match with a .444 hitting percentage. Peterson and Kellerman each made only one attack error.
“What I really liked is what Claire and Sophie did in limiting errors and scoring,” Rosenthal said. “Sophie was hitting a 1.000 through set two.”
Middle blocker Molly Spitznagle was able to get involved in the match earlier than she did against Georgia and added eight kills.
Setter Caitlin Dotson was credited with 37 assists.
“It was a typical match for us,” Rosenthal said. “You look down the box score and see everybody contributing at a pretty high pace.”
Bri McCombs made her first start at libero. Stephanie Rex came off the bench and added 11 digs.
“Bri starting gave us a different look,” Rosenthal said. “That was the first time Stephanie had not started a match in the libero jersey. I thought she did a fantastic job of coming off the bench and doing her job and doing what the team needs.”
