NASHVILLE, TENN.-  After getting behind early in the second half, the Lipscomb men’s soccer team was unable to make a comeback as it fell 2-0 to Central Arkansas in the Hyatt Place Select Lipscomb Invitational on Sunday.

Sunday’s game was a tale of two halves. The first half, both teams matched each other’s intensity and battled to a scoreless first half.

The Bisons (3-2-1) had plenty of opportunities in the first stanza with eight shots attempted, but only put two on goal. Central Arkansas (3-4-0) took six.

A different story was told in the second period.

Just 47 seconds into the second half, the Bears took a 1-0 advantage on a Logan Miller penalty kick.

Lipscomb head coach Charles Morrow would have liked to see a better reaction from his squad.

“Anytime you give up an early goal against the run of play it tends to affect you,” said Morrow. “We were too casual before that goal happened.

“When we gave it up, it should have upset the guys that we put ourselves in that situation. You would normally see more urgency to play positive and get the goal back.”

Opportunities were there for the Bisons, but were unable to find an equalizer before the Bears struck again in the 61st minute.

Wes Carson was able to outrace the Bisons defense to track down a lob. Lipscomb goalie Micah Bledsoe charged the ball in an attempt to corral it, but Carson connected and put it left net for a 2-0 lead.

“We expect to play more disciplined than we did today,” Morrow said. “It’s not that everything we did today was all bad, but we saw that we lacked the discipline needed to have success and win games.

“I just think today we made some mistakes, and even after they were made, we didn’t see a heightened resolve or fight.”

The Bisons were able to fire 10 shots in the second half, putting six on goal, but was unable to mount a comeback.

“To sum up the game, embarrassing would be the word,” said Morrow. “I thought we were too casual and as a result it’s a game we look at and say our own mistakes beat us, and anytime you beat yourself that is disappointing.”

Lipscomb will have to get over the defeat quickly as the Bisons hit the road again for a four game road trip. Thursday, the Bisons matchup with Georgia State in a 5 p.m. kickoff before traveling to Springfield, Mo. to face Missouri State in their last non-conference tune-up on Sept. 29.

Belmont took home the trophy for the Hyatt Place Select Lipscomb Invitational after finishing the weekend 1-0-1.
