AD Hutcheson statement on phasing out usage of LU

Thursday, November 07, 2013

Dear Bisons,

You may have seen reports in the media over the last few days concerning the interlocking LU logo that has been used by athletics over the past 22 months. Because you are a vital part of our program, we just wanted to share a little information with you about the situation.

Late last year, the university was contacted by legal counsel for Liberty University who informed us that they had copyrighted the use of the letters “LU” some time ago, and we did not have the right to use it as a logo or in any other description of Lipscomb University.  A trademark search was done when we developed the logo and at that time no conflict was found in that search. However after being notified of this claim, we retained outside legal counsel and we negotiated possible resolutions. In the end, our options were to either initiate federal court litigation to adjudicate the rights to “LU” or to discontinue its use.

After much deliberation, the decision was made that the cost and distraction to take the issue to court would be substantial and the outcome could still be negative. We believe that it’s better to invest our time and resources in providing a quality education to our students.

While we are certainly disappointed that we cannot use this mark or “LU” to reference our athletics teams, we know that Lipscomb is a unique brand that is about much more than a logo or colors. We are already in the process of developing new graphic branding for our teams and will phase out the usage of the “LU” mark in the coming months.

Thank you for your continued support of Lipscomb athletics. Your enthusiastic support is making a difference in the lives of our student-athletes, and we look forward to seeing you in the stands this year.

It’s a great time to be a Bison and part of #OurTeam!
