NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After months of preparation and weeks of practice, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team begins regular season play Sunday in Allen Arena against Morehead State. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.

The Lady Bisons have played in two exhibition games, a 68-57 win over Freed-Hardeman and an 83-66 victory over Fisk.

The common theme in the two games was double-doubles from Ashley Southern. Against Freed-Hardeman, Southern posted 14 points and 12 rebounds and followed that with 17 points and 14 rebounds against Fisk.

“Ashley has a nose for the ball,” head coach Greg Brown said. “She is very active. She has so much more potential in her. Some of that comes from not having played for a year.

“We expect a lot more out of her and not in a bad way. There is just so much more there.”

Southern joins eight other new faces that will see time on the floor for Lipscomb including junior Sara Bliss, and freshmen Maya Dillard, Chandler Cooper, Kelsey Gregory, Elise Spann, Faith LeGate and Brooklyn Apple.

Sophomore Danay Fothergill becomes eligible after exams in December after transferring to Lipscomb last December. Cooper has appealed to be eligible immediately after transferring from Florida. Lipscomb is awaiting a ruling from the NCAA.

“The meshing is daily,” Brown said. “I think a lot of that comes with them getting more comfortable with how we do our practice and a normal routine. Now you start a whole new part of meshing with a game and travel routine.

“All of that is just kind of a slow process. The best thing is they are aware and very excited about what is going on. But there will be growth along the way.”

The Lady Bisons finished last season 3-28, 2-16 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Sophomore Alex Banks is the top statistical returner after scoring 8.4 points and snagging 4.9 rebounds per game.

Morehead State finished the 2012-13 campaign with a 9-21 record, 5-11 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Lipscomb will be tasked with stopping senior Terrice Robinson, who is the top returning player for the Eagles. She averaged 17.5 points per game while earning Second Team All-OVC last year.

Much like the Lady Bisons, Morehead State must mesh seven new faces into its roster. Unlike the Lady Bisons, MSU did not play any exhibition games.
