NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Giving up at least one run in each of the first five innings, the Lipscomb baseball team dropped the final game of the 2014 “Mule Mix Classic” 9-3 to Miami (Ohio) on Sunday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium.
The Redhawks (1-5) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard pushing across an unearned run in the first before the Bisons (1-6) threatened in the bottom of the frame. Juniors Jonathan Allison and Mike Korte drew back-to-back walks to get things going for Lipscomb but Miami starter Ryan Powers got a pair of strikeouts and a pickoff to end the threat.
Miami would then add two runs in the second, a run in the third and a run in the fourth to jump out to a 5-0 advantage.
Lipscomb got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth as a pair of runs crossed the dish. Junior shortstop Grant Massey got thing started with a one-out walk before senior catcher Nick Rome hit a double to right putting both runners in scoring position.
That set the table for Allison, who took an inside pitch and delivered it just inside the left field line allowing both runners to score and make it a 6-2 game.
That score did not hold long however as the Redhawks added an unearned run in the seventh and then a pair in the eighth as third baseman Dan Walsh lifted a pitch over the right field fence for a two-run homer and a 9-2 advantage.
Lipscomb refused to quit though mounting a comeback attempt in the eighth. Allison and Korte got the frame started with back-to-back walks before junior first baseman Tyson Ashcraft singled through the right side to score Allison from second. That would be all the damage the Bisons could manage for the final run of the afternoon.
Powers picked up the win for Miami tossing six innings allowing five hits, two earned runs and three walks. He also struck out five Bisons. Lipscomb sophomore starter Denton Norman took the loss lasting three innings on the hill. Norman gave up four hits, two earned runs and a pair of walks while fanning four.
The Bisons hit the road on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. contest at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville.
