Right-hander, Chris Burnett, threw five innings of scoreless relief as the Bisons defeated East Tennessee State University 10-3 on Friday, April 13.
After falling behind 3-0, the Bisons used a five-run fifth to take a lead they would never relinquish.
Allen Bolden singled to lead off the fifth. Ben Williams followed with a single to put runners on first and second with no outs. Shane Simpkins reached on a throwing error by the Bucs catcher. The next batter, Casey Bond plated the Bisons' first run of the game with a single to right. Ryan Wilkins and Eric Abend each added a two-run single to give the Bisons a 5-3 lead.
However, the Bisons' offense was not done for the day. Bolden, again, got things started with a single in the sixth. After Williams struck out, Simpkins doubled to right, scoring Bolden for a 6-3 lead. Bond followed with a single to left for another Bisons' run. Bond would go on to score on a throwing error by the Bucs catcher, while Justin Sanders would add an RBI sacrifice fly.
Simpkins drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh to complete the games scoring and give the Bisons' the 10-3 victory.
Sophomore, Eric Abend, starting behind the plate for the Bisons, went 1-4, with two RBIs.
"I felt real comfortable with him behind the plate," Burnett said. "I have a lot of confidence in him, and it makes it easier to pitch. A lot of the credit goes to him."
The Bisons' starter, John King, lasted four innings, giving up three runs on four hits in the no-decision. He was relieved by right-hander, Chris Burnett to start the fifth. In five innings of work, Burnett gave up just five hits and no earned runs, while striking out five.
"It is a lot easier to pitch when you know your offense is going to put up ten runs," Burnett said. "With a ten-run lead, and your defense behind you, ready to play for the win, it is easier to go out there and throw strikes."
"Winning game one gives us momentum going into Saturday and Sunday," Burnett said. "Hopefully we can keep rolling with it."
On the season, Burnett is 2-0 with a .60 ERA. In 15 innings of work, he has given up just one earned run. Opponents are batting .189 against him.
The Bisons' will return to the field tomorrow when they take on ETSU in a double-header which is set to kick off at 12 p.m.
Left-hander, Rex Brothers is scheduled to take the mound for the Bisons in game one. In Brothers last start against Mercer, he gave up two runs, one earned, over eight innings. The performance was enough to make him the A-Sun Pitcher of the Week. On the season, Brothers is 6-1 with a 3.53 ERA.
Right-hander, Taylor Merry, is expected to make the game two start for the Bisons. This season he is 1-0 with a 5.62 ERA.
